Lack of NAAFC Edinburgh
« on: October 23, 2017, 07:55:41 AM »
Hi All,

we are located in Edinburgh (having returned  recently after nearly 30 years away).  We are just beginning to plan attending some NAAFC sessions and it looks like Windygates is the nearest venue (good as as well as it specialises in Button boxes) and also  probably Newtongrange.  However it puzzles me that  there is no NAAFC group in the city of Edinburgh itself. Was there a historical group? I was disappointed to find that most of the pubs that ran open sessions in my youth have all become effectively tourist bars with programmed sessions.  Would be interested in your thoughts on this thank you!

Newtongrange is a lot nearer Edinburgh than Windygates. I strongly recommend going along to Newtongrange Box and Fiddle Club on November 27 to listen to Leonard Brown and Malcolm Ross. They must be about the best duo appearing at Box and Fiddle Clubs just now. Great musicians and highly entertaining. We had them at Renfrew earlier this month.
There's also the Livingston club, not far along the M8. See the Club Diary on the Box and Fiddle website for other possibilities.

I don’t know anything about the lack of a Box & Fiddle club in Edinburgh, or whether there’s ever been one. Needs some enterprising person(s) to test the water and maybe start one up. That happened in Glasgow this year, which now has a club; going well by all accounts. Whether there ever was one in Glasgow before, I don’t know. If there was it must have been a long time ago.

Newtongrange is the nearest club to Edinburgh - you've just missed the 40th Birthday celebration of the club!
We have one regular button box player.
You can get there and back with Edinburgh buses 29 and 33.
Other clubs within reasonable distance from Edinbugh (assuming that you have transport) are:
Livingston (held in Whitburn!)
Dunfermline (held in Rosyth!)
Peebles
Galashiels (just restarting in a new venue)
Macmerry (Sunday afternoons)

There was a club in Edinburgh a long time ago, but I didn't go to it.
It was run by Edinburgh teacher Chrissie Letham.

Thanks you David and Bill for the helpful info.   We managed to get down to  the Galashiels Club this week to hear Ian Cruickshanks band  in the 2nD November - what a great evening we had, even though we had to leave early to get back to Edinburgh  as  my youngest  was beginning to get sleepy (he's only 11).  Sad to hear there is not an Edinburgh club but Newtongrange is pretty close (pity to miss the 40th anniversary) but we'll get there.  That must have been some Edinburgh club,  Im sure you know that Chrissie Letham was the daughter of Peter Letham (the great melodeon player)  and a great accordionist in her own  right. Her  son Owen Murray is Prof and  Head of Classical Accordion at London's Royal Academy of Music.   We will try to get to the NG club for the 27th.

thanks again!
