Title: 'Take The Floor' BBC Radio Scotland 26th and 27th October
Post by: Bill on October 25, 2013, 08:20:03 PM
Robert Nairn and his Highland Band are the featured performers on 'Take The Floor' (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03fgfpv) on BBC Radio Scotland this weekend, 19.05 on Saturday 26th and 13.05 on Sunday 27th, and on BBC iPlayer. Robert, who leads the band on his Hohner Shand Morino, is in his early twenties and is a graduate of the Scottish Music course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Glasgow. He is, I think, the only graduate of the course with the three-row button accordion as his main instrument.

Bill,
I find it encouraging that there are some young players taking an interest in this wonderful instrument.

I was very pleased to see, at the Mod at Paisley a fortnight ago, three girls from Stornoway playing BCC# in the under-19 class, and others the melodeon. There's a very strong button box scene on Lewis. And not to forget that the Mod Open Accordion champion, prolific competition winner in the last couple of years, recording artist, club guest artist, Brandon McPhee, is still a schoolboy.

In addition to what Roy has said I'd like to mention that Scott will be playing a couple of tunes on a Shand Morino as well as mainly on a PA. The Shand Morino that Scott has was my late father's box.

Hi , not sure if I should put a reply on an event - after the event ?
I have just been listening to
Scott Band on take the floor and I  thought he was brilliant.
In particular I liked the Robbie Shepherd MBE tune , Ian Sherrits  Waltz  ( His own composition ),
Waltz for Tracy and of course my favourite played on The Shand Morino - The Grand Slam leading and the smooth transition leading into Davie Pollock of Roslin.
Great to hear the comparison between the piano and button box - Has that been done before I wonder?
Anyone that wants to hear a young man who can play both with equal skill..  Its Scott
 .. Well done Scott.  Eck

I think it's OK to put a review after the event. If it's positive, as here, it might encourage others to listen to or go and see the performer on a future occasion.
This was the first time in a while that I listened to TTF on Saturday night (usually it's iPlayer). I really enjoyed the programme as well, particularly Ian Sherrit's Waltz for the New Hesitation Waltz.
(I knew Scott Band was young, but not THAT young - 24!)

I first met Scott at the Blairgowrie club when he was about 14. He is a first class musician and composer and a rarity these days is a gentleman in the true sense of the word., He composed a march for me after he heard that I had a heart attack in Mar2009 that is how kind and thoughtful a person he is. This greatly aided my recovery.
The original is written in E maj. he did also provide a copy of it in D mag. It is written in the Scott Skinner style and is a bit of a handful and I prefer to play it in D but do try to keep my hand on the E scale.
He is also the conductor of the Dundee Strathspey  & Reel Socty.

I don't have any contact information for Scott Band. If anyone should bump into him anytime soon, could you ask about the availability of the music for "Ian Sherrit's Waltz"?

Does anyone know whether he regularly includes playing the Shand Morino in his Box and Fiddle club appearances? If so, I should include him in the 'Future Events' list.

 Hi Bill,
Yes, Scott does include the SM in all his Club dates.
He is on the guest artist lists for the NAFAC and should be available on their site. If you can't find it I'll email it to you.

Thanks Roy. The email address on the NAAFC guest artist list looks improbable. If you have the right one I'd appreciate it.

Many thanks for the kind comments regarding the broadcast, I've had several phonecalls and emails from current bandleaders and bandleaders of the past saying how much they enjoyed it. So many thanks again.

Welcome to the forum, and thanks very much for the music for "Ian Sherrit's Waltz".
