Button Box Course, SMO, Isle of Skye, 18-22 July 2016
« on: November 02, 2015, 09:05:53 AM »
Sabhail Mòr Ostaig, Isle of Skye, has announced dates for the 2016 Button Box Course with Robert Nairn and Fergie MacDonald. 18-22 July (noted as TBC). Also on the same week, as usual, the piano accordion course with Addie Harper Jr. Putting up dates this early must be something of a record.

Enjoy yourself Eck!

I was on Skye a few weeks ago but avoided SMO  ;D
They're still in money grabbing mode... £2+ for showers for campers!!

Hi Eck

Are you still working on this year's report?

It's not a trick question ...what am I supposed to do with a perfumed green potato that smells like a xxxx's palace
(no! ...has to be physically possible ;))

Hi Eck

Are you still working on this year's report?

While you are waiting - I was there.

Course, tutors, fellow participants, partying till the wee hours - all good.
Biggest disappointment for most was that it had to come to an end - Week seemed to fly past right from the start.

If you have already paid SMO plenty money to camp on their grounds - agreed £2 for a shower is a bit much.

... but

If you are camping for free at SMO or are camping some place else then £2 is fairly reasonable - I think that is less than going to our local council swimming pool for a shower.

How much does it cost to camp at SMO?

Ah - that makes sense Graham. ;D

You asking for a report kind of fooled me.

Why not write a report yourself - my mini report is only intended as a stopgap until a fuller report emerges.

Its very difficult for me to give a report and be able to speak for everyone that was at SMO
We all go for different reasons so.... Probably best just to give my thoughts and opinion.

This year we had 13 Button Box players in our class some of whom were play by ear players and were good at it.
In particular a young lad and his Grandad from Inverness picked up tunes very easily.
I have always struggled learning this way but that's part of the reason I attend as I know its a weak point of mine.
The tutors ( Fergie and Robert ) give encouragement , simple instructions and show remarkable patience with all the pupils .

I noticed that at some point in the week all of the Button box players were involved in the late night music sessions ( Some more than others ! ) .

Perhaps for the first time ( willing to be contradicted here ! ) the Button Box players were a bigger part of the music sessions at night.
This was perhaps due to the Button Box players having brilliant singers , concertina players , fiddlers , moothie players and guitarists in our group as well !

Two of the tunes selected to learn were  "Whisky Galore" written by Fergie and Maree's Waltz written by Robert for his girlfriend and as of last Friday now Mrs Nairn . ... braw !

There were a few funny moments along the way of course and perhaps the funniest being my very good pal from South of England who phoned me on Sunday night to say he wouldn't be at our session as he had accidentally got on the wrong ferry and instead had to spend the night in Uist!
Or the chap.. I  cant remember his name ( a big lad with beard and English accent ) who accidentally locked himself out of his motorhome leaving his poor wee dog inside!.. story had a happy ending .

I agree with Andy I had an absolutely brilliant time and thanks to all the other players that were in Skye this year, many of whom are in this Forum .
