Ian Powrie medley on The White Heather Club
« on: December 19, 2019, 09:52:32 PM »
Hi everyone
I was listening lately to some White heather club shows on YouTube, with a variety of guests.
The Powrie band were one such guest, very slick band, perhaps the best of all time.
One particular set of tunes I really enjoyed was their arrangement  Highland Laddie medley.

I enjoyed it so much I thought I’d give it a go, I don’t usually follow other artists arrangements but the Powrie band is one of my favourites and Jimmy Blue was a huge influence.
Here’a a version I recorded for YouTube..
Does anyone know where the last measure of The Breakdown come from?
I’ve never heard that triplet version until I heard The Powrie band play it..
Regards
Daniel

I've never not known the 3 parts of the Breakdown and everyone I've ever heard play the tune has always played the 3 parts, as on the first track on this LP on Youtube

I’ve only ever heard the two measure version, Will Starr I’m sure does that version on his Starr Tyme album, but then it’s not a tune I really heard a lot over the years.
Powrie does a grand job throughout though.

Need to dig out Starr's record again! Don't think the Breakdown is peculiar to Perth and Angus area though it is a standard tune that everyone knows here.

I've only found one printed score for the Breakdown and it has the three parts. It's in The Third Ceilidh Collection for Fiddlers published by the Skye company Taigh na Teud.

Btw, if anyone is not familiar with this range of books for fiddlers (and the series “Fiddle Music of the Scottish Highlands”), they are ideal for accordion players as they have the tune treble staff + bass chord symbols.
